Textpattern QuikPik 3.0
UPDATE May 8, 2005: QuikPik 3.0 will no longer be supported. You can find the same functionality in the newer rss_admin_quikpik plugin.
UPDATE Feb 21, 2005: QuikPik 3.0 is now for use with Textpattern 1.0 RC3 or later. If you are looking to download the QuikPik menu for the first time and are using an older version of Texpattern, try QuikPik 2.5 or QuikPik 1.0.
Although I swore I was planning to wait for the official Textpattern 1.0 release before making any more updates to plugins or hacks, the waiting has gotten to me and I couldn’t hold out. I’ve recently seen several different efforts aimed at revamping Textpattern’s admin interface so I’ve had it on my mind. Pete has kindly offered some alternate color schemes for QuikPik 2.5, Martin is working on redoing the admin panel and Philippe has restyled the admin interface and included the original quikpik menu. Some comments made on Martin’s post got me thinking and one in particular got me started on QuikPik version 3.
What’s new
The major highlight of QuikPik 3.0 is the ability to edit the menu’s style from within the Textpattern admin interface. In addition to styling the menu, you also have the ability to override the standard textpattern.css file. As you can see in the examples below, you now have the ability to totally customize the style of your admin interface in the same way that you style your actual site. The menu has also been upgraded to use the Son of Suckerfish Dropdowns technique.
How it works
The distribution now includes images and and installer script in addition to the txplib_head.php file. Here’s how it works…
- A new section is created called quikpik
- 3 style options will be loaded (quikpik classic, wilshire|one and quiktuitous)
- The style that is assigned to the quikpik section will be loaded after the textpattern.css allowing the ability to override the bases styles
- The updated txp_img files were simply resaved with transparent backgrounds for better display on colored backgrounds. If you plan on sticking with a white background there’s no need to upload the images.
The default theme is lovely shades of Textpattern yellow and red. The wilshire|one theme is based on this very site and the quiktuitous theme is based on the Fortuitous theme for TXP by Chris McLeod.
Installation
- Extract the quikpik3.zip file and upload the files to you site’s root directory (where your Textpattern index.php file is). The paths are setup in the archive but you can confirm that the installation script ends up in your textpattern directory, txplib_head in your textpattern/lib directory and the images in the textpattern/txp_img directory.
- Navigate to http://www.yoursite.com/textpattern/quikpik3install.php.
- Remove the installation script.
- Login to the admin interface and you’ll have a new section called quikpik and 3 quikpik styles.
- If you’d like, go to the section list and change the style for the quikpik section or create your own.
Updating the styles
Each stylesheet is separted into 4 main sections.
- The first contains the basic layout and formatting on the menus.
- The second allows you to show or hide the standard rows of tabs.
- The third contains styling related to the coloring of links, backgrounds and borders. Most of your updates will likely take place in this section.
- The final section contains overrides for the textpattern.css file and is where you can add additional changes to the main interface styling.
For best results, DO NOT change the order of these sections.
Creating a new style
The process of creating a new style is simple as well. While viewing the quikpik style, save a new copy under a different name. Edit the new file, switch the style assigned to the quikpik section, and you’ve got a newly style admin interface. You can also sift through the textpattern.css file to find elements that you’d like to override. The wilshire|one and quiktuitous themes have a few examples of that.

If you add the following line of javascript after the sfhover function in lib/txplib_head.php it wil work.
if (window.attachEvent) window.attachEvent(“onload”, sfHover);
The looks are not as nice as in firefox but its ok. Do you know a work around for not showing the menu when you hover over a pulldown(select)?

Someone had pointed that out before but thanks for finding the problem. For some reason the transition to the Son of Suckerfish didn’t seem to go too well. I might switch back. The old version was fine in IE.

The quikpik menu is updated so that the new “files” section is included.
The IE problems have also been fixed in the latest download.

Um, yeah… I got this error:
Error creating section
and the interface is now screwed up… any way to uninstall? Or any reason why this would be happening? I am on 1.0rc3 BTW.
Any help would be much appreciated.

The same error on changelog 344
I can see all my adminlinks stacked on top of the adminpanel.
May be some confusion, about how this should be installed?

This hack has not been updated recently so its compatible with recent versions of Textpattern. You’ll need to revert back to an original version of the txplib_head.php file to uninstall.
In place of this the rss_admin_quikpik plugin now contains the same functionality as the QuikPik Hack did.
