I Saw Bigfoot

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale During our weekly foray to the local Acme Fresh Market for some groceries I made a new discovery. As I rounded the corner and entered my favorite section of the store (the beer section) I spotted something I hadn’t seen before. Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine Style Ale.

While the Pale Ale is one of my all-time favorite beers, the Bigfoot Ale was new to me. The first thing I noticed of course was the whopping 9.6% alcohol content which basically packs the punch of 2 beers into 1. I’ve only sampled a few barleywines in the past and wasn’t fond of the ones I’d tried. If not made well, the strength and bitterness of the brew can be overwhelming.

So I arrived home and promptly opened up my first Bigfoot. I was immediately surprised by the flavor as it was not too far off from the Pale Ale and much milder than I expected. Other than a slightly more potent and bitter flavor it went down nicely. As I polished off bottle number two I was reminded of something…9.6%.

As an added bonus, it seemed as though the store was a bit confused on how to price this fine ale. While most reports I’ve seen have it priced at close to $10 and up for a six-pack, I paid the same $6.99 that I pay for the Pale Ale. Quite a deal for getting knocked on your ass in half as many beers.

Overall, well worth the experiment although I’m going to have to perform a second round of testing this evening in order to confirm my findings.

You might consider performing another round of testing that introduces Red Bull into the mix of beverages consumed.
