The Great Big Food Show

This weekend we attended the Great Big Food Show at the International Exposition (IX) Center in Cleveland. The show was put on by the Food Network and featured several personalities from the channels lineup of cooking shows. Among those in attendance, we saw shows featuring Rachel Ray and Mario Batali.

The main exhibit area was full of different vendors featuring their foods and wares. This created an atmosphere similar to that of an oversized Sam’s Club store complete with the standard free samples. It amazes me that people will wait in line for 30 minutes at a time in order to receive a free potato chip. Especially after having paid $20 admission to the event, which in my book, doesn’t make it much of a free sample. In any case, if you ever needed proof that Cleveland is one of the fattest cities in the country, all you needed to do was watch people push and squeeze their way to their ultimate goal: free Starbucks!

The other highlight of the show were the performances by celebrity chefs from the food network. Now, if that sentence sounded a little funny to you, you’re not alone. To see people flocking about chefs as if they were rock stars in between trips to the free samples was quite amusing. Many people waited in line for several hours in order to have the $50 books they had just purchased signed by their author.

All in all the event made for a fun day. Rachael Ray’s show was very energetic and entertaining. Mario Batali however is a little full of himself considering he’s just a cook. But the best part of the day might just have been watching our fellow Clevelanders swarming about the free samples.
