New Textpattern Site - Mestolando
On their new site, Mestolando, Brian and Claudia share their recipes and techniques for making delicious italian food in their home in Florence, Italy.
Brian and Claudia approached me having already created several HTML templates that would be the model for the new site. They hired me to design and develop a Textpattern site based on their existing web design that would allow them to manage the day-to-day operations of the site on their own.
Textpattern Goodies
The site has a couple features of note. The first is the integration of the Brightcove player which is used to deliver high quality digital video. While most cooking sites offer just a list of ingredients and preparation instructions, Mestolando shows you how to make their receipes as well. Each recipe (article) uses a custom field containing the Brightcove video ID. When the recipe is displayed, the video is dynamically included on the page.
The second feature of note is the use of the rss_unlimited_categories plugin which allows them to “tag” each recipe with as many keywords as they need. This gives users the ability to navigate the site and search for recipes based on their favorite ingredients.
Overall, the site is a great example of how Textpattern, along with a few plugins, can be used to design just about any type of site you can imagine. So if you have a hunger for Italian food, head on over to Mestolando and check it out.

Hi, would you be so kind as to tell me how you pass the brightcove video id to the player using a custom field please. I’ve been trying for ages but can’t figure it out.
Love the new site by the way, the colours are perfect.
Thanks
Lee

The video id is held in a custom field.
In order to display an article’s video, I setup an article form with the javascript needed to embed the video and referred to the custom field for the video id.
