Wake Up 5 Minutes Earlier

This morning on the way to work as I looked in my rearview mirror to make a lane change, I noticed another driver doing something that you just shouldn’t do while driving. No, not that. So that prompted me to think of all the ridiculous things I’ve seen people doing in their cars on the way to work.

First, some background. Most of my drive to work is on the highway. This means average speeds of anywhere from 65 to 90 MPH. At 7:00 am or before, most people haven’t gotten the morning coffee yet and are probably still half awake. Yet it doesn’t prevent them from doing any of the following:

  1. Men using electic shavers – This was today’s episode. A gentleman in the car behind me, calmly shaving his face while looking into his visor mirror. For pete’s sake man, how long could it take to do that at home? Actually, I know! A few minutes at most.
  2. Women putting on makeup – This is the women’s version of the car shave but probably worse. It requires more attention and is usually done in the rearview mirror rather than the visor. How someone can put that stuff on in a moving vehicle, let alone one they’re driving, is beyond me.
  3. Reading the newspaper – I’ve seen newspapers spead full across the steering while of a car while the person cruises at highway speeds. Seen it more than once too. I’ve also seen books and magazines as well but the newspaper seems to be the reading material of choice in the car.
  4. Taking notes – I’ve also spotted notebooks or day planners on the steering wheel more than once. Not only there for reading, but also for the person to write in. Similarly, some people after reading their newspaper on the steering wheel like to work on the crossword puzzle.

Bottom line, please people, wake up 5 minutes earlier and shave, put on your makeup, read the paper and do whatever else you want to do before you leave your house. At the least you look like a moron when people drive past you. Worse than that, you’re bound to cause an accident one of these days when you cut yourself shaving or get mascara in your eye while going 75 MPH.

Interesting timing, as I noticed every one of those four things during my own commute this morning. I’m always tempted to swerve very close to them, just to see if it gets their attention.

i once saw people playing a card game (appeared to be poker) on their dashboard while driving down route 85s.

Oh, man, and I thought driving while talking on your phone was bad.

i once saw one driver talking on phone and eating at the same time. It’s 3 worse things: don’t eat, when drive, don’t talk on phone when drive, and don’t talk when you eat :D
